The SimLabSolutions Asthma Management Training Bundle was designed by the DiaMedical USA Nurse Educator to help instructors teach students about asthma.

Nurses and respiratory therapists frequently care for patients with asthma in acute and outpatient settings. Asthma exacerbations can be life-threatening and prompt administration of bronchodilators is essential. Nurses and respiratory therapists must be aware of the differences between various bronchodilator therapies and the indications for each.

Valved holding chambers are used with metered dose inhalers to improve medication delivery, especially for children. Less hand-mouth coordination is required and inhalation is slower for delivery to the lower airways.

Peak Flow Meters are used to measure Forced Vital Capacity and how well air is moved out of the lungs. Forced Vital Capacity is lowered during asthma attacks due to narrowing of the airways for exhalation. Asthma Action Plans are used with Peak Flow Meters to help patients recognize when their symptoms get worse and what to do in an emergency.

Skills To Be Taught
  • Assessment of the patient with asthma using a peak flow meter
  • Differentiation between various types of bronchodilator medications
  • Administration of bronchodilator medications via metered dose inhaler and nebulizer
  • Use of holding chambers with metered dose inhalers
  • Oxygen administration to maintain pulse oximetry > 95%
  • Use of Asthma Action Plans for asthma management

  • The SimLabSolutions Rapid Sequence Intubation Training Bundle was designed by the DiaMedical USA Nurse Educator to help instructors teach students about RSI. RSI is important right now due to COVID. Lung damage from the COVID virus leaves the patient unable to breathe or maintain adequate oxygen levels. The sickest COVID patients require intubation and mechanical ventilation to survive. RSI is the procedure used to sedate the patient and quickly perform intubation.

The concept of Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI) is that the patient is sedated and paralyzed in order to allow for intubation without constant artificial breaths via a bag valve mask (BVM). It is the fastest and most effective way to emergently secure the patient’s airway. RSI is particularly useful for patients with an intact gag reflex or a life-threatening illness or injury. Neuromuscular blocking agents that are used to relax the muscles will cause the patient to stop breathing. Hypoxia will develop rapidly if the patient is not intubated and ventilated in a timely manner.

Indications For Intubation & Mechanical Ventilation
    • Airway protection, especially with impending obstruction (airway burn, penetrating neck injury)
    • Respiratory failure (hypoxia, hypercapnia)
    • Optimize oxygen delivery
    • Unresponsiveness
    • Terminate seizure (brain injury)
    • Temperature control (serotonin syndrome)
    • Upper cervical spine injury
    Skills To Be Taught
    • Administration of IV induction agents and neuromuscular blockers
    • Dosage calculation based on body weight

The SimLabSolutions Chest Tube Management Training Bundle was designed by the DiaMedical USA Nurse Educator to help instructors teach students how to perform assessments on patients with chest tubes, identify air leaks and other problems, and create a temporary water seal when needed.

Chest tubes are used to help keep lungs re-expanded after pneumothorax or pleural effusion. They are inserted between the lungs and the chest wall to remove air or fluid from the pleural space. Proper chest tube management is essential to prevent infection or collapse of the lung. The DiaMedical Chest Tube Management Training Bundle includes all of the equipment and supplies for educators.

    Skills To Be Taught
    • Respiratory assessment of the patient with a chest tube
    • Normal and abnormal findings when monitoring a chest tube drainage system
