Heart Case Trainer with Modules

The Heart Case is a portable, high-fidelity surgical simulator developed with Stanford University to provide cardiothoracic residents hands-on, realistic training in essential cardiac procedures. Its compact design, interchangeable components, and lifelike anatomy enable safe, repeatable practice of core operative skills, such as bypass grafting, valve implantation, and vessel anastomosis, all without the need for animal tissue.

Overview
Cardiac surgery is a core skill that Cardiothoracic residents must master. The Heart Case provides learners with a platform for deliberate practice of basic cardiothoracic surgical skills in a safe, repeatable environment. It is a compact thorax that includes the pertinent adult anatomy of a full sternotomy opening, without the bulk of a full trainer, approximately 5” x 7”.

In collaboration with James C. Fann, MD, Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University, The Chamberlain Group developed the first portable, high-fidelity, non-cadaveric “heart-in-a-box” surgical simulator. This device is designed to train residents and fellows in core cardiothoracic skills, offering exceptional anatomical accuracy and tactile realism without the constraints of animal tissue.

    Hands-on Training
The Heart Case is designed specifically to address the needs of the cardiothoracic resident:
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, both Proximal and Distal Anastomoses
  • Aortic Valve Implantation
  • Aortic Cannulation
  • End-to-Side Anastomosis on small vessels
  • Mitral Valve Procedures
    Interchangeable
  • The positionable arm and mating plates enable the use of many of our cardiothoracic trainers within the anatomical context of a sternotomy.
  • Rapid interchange from user-to-user and procedure-to-procedure.
  • The anatomy may be filled with fluid or air for Aortic and Vessel Anastomosis, allowing the resident to test for ‘hemostasis’.
